Senior Software Engineer, Backend - Distributed Systems
camunda
Job description
About the role
Camunda is the enterprise platform for agentic orchestration, trusted by over 700 organisations worldwide. It is fully remote and global, and is transforming into an AI-first organisation. As a Senior Software Engineer, Backend on the Distributed Systems team, you will help build and evolve the durable, highly available, horizontally scalable streaming platform that underpins Camunda 8's Orchestration Cluster.
Key responsibilities
- Design, build and maintain backend services for the distributed streaming platform, ensuring durability, high availability and horizontal scalability.
- Lead medium-to-large engineering initiatives (3+ months) end to end: partner with Product, write solution designs, draft project plans and drive delivery.
- Help mature disaster recovery and resilience, including an online backup/restore API and multi-region, multi-tenant cloud capabilities.
- Design and implement developer and operator tooling for troubleshooting and safe operation of distributed systems.
- Work with DevOps and other teams on CI, testing and local development workflows to reduce PR time to merge.
- Participate in L3 support and on-call rotations, investigating performance-sensitive production issues.
Required profile
- 7+ years of professional experience as a software engineer, focused on backend and/or distributed systems.
- Proven experience leading medium-to-large initiatives, coordinating with multiple teams and delivering predictably.
- Hands-on experience with highly concurrent, data-intensive software and low-level network and disk I/O.
- Ability to work autonomously and communicate clearly in a remote-first environment.
Nice to have
- Workflow automation or process orchestration software experience.
- Distributed systems algorithms such as Raft, Paxos, SWIM or CRDTs.
- Observability (logging, metrics, tracing) and L3/on-call experience.
- Deep knowledge of the Java Virtual Machine.
What we offer
- Competitive, location-based total cash compensation: US $143,800 to $231,900, UK £90,300 to £148,500, Singapore S$178,600 to S$267,900, plus equity through a virtual stock option plan.
- Remote and flexible work, home office budget and co-working support.
- Healthcare, retirement and pension plans, and up to $/€/£1,000 per year for learning.
